Food bags, packaging bags, and garbage bags made of biodegradable plastics are highly favored due to their biodegradability. Biodegradable packaging materials are generally composed of biodegradable polymer added to laminated films or directly mixed with laminated materials to form films. Food packaging materials and containers are generally required to ensure that the food does not rot, is isolated from oxygen, and the materials are non-toxic. Among them, the representative ones are polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polyhydroxyvalerate (PHV) and their copolymers (trade name Biopol), whose physical properties are similar to polyethylene and polypropylene, and their heat sealing properties are good. Biopol can be biodegraded or incinerated after use, and their oxygen consumption is only equivalent to the oxygen they put into the atmosphere for photosynthesis. The CO2 produced after treatment is the total CO2 intake for photosynthesis, so it can be considered to have completely entered the biological cycle.
Biodegradable plastics can also be used as disposable cushioning materials. According to reports, the polyvinyl alcohol starch based biodegradable plastic developed by Japan's Koga Corporation is a high-performance cushioning material with a slightly higher apparent density than traditional polystyrene cushioning materials.
